Remembrance Day

We started our week with a special Remembrance Day assembly to remember those that have served in the armed forces. We learnt that originally, Remembrance Day commemorated Armistice Day and the end of the First World War, but has subsequently become a memorial day for all those that have lost their lives in any war. We also found out that there are actually four different coloured poppies, red, white, black and purple. We explored what each one represents.

In our literacy lessons, we used war themed stories to inspire our writing. In Year 3, we read the story Where the Poppies Now Grow and then used the ideas from the book to write descriptive poems about the poppy fields. Finally, we used our oracy skills to perform our poetry to the rest of the class!
