Protected Characteristics
Learning about protected characteristics is interwoven into life at school through our assemblies, PSHE and safeguarding curriculums.
What are Protected Characteristics?
Protected characteristics are things about us that make us who we are. The law says that everyone should be treated fairly, and nobody should be unkind to someone because of these things.
They are:
- Age
- Different Types of Families
- Disability
- Gender
- How You Present Yourself
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or Belief
- Who Your Choose to Love
How and Why Do We Teach These?
We teach these characteristics in an age-appropriate way to ensure children understand that everyone is unique, complimenting our No Outsiders work, and that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and fairness.
By exploring these ideas, children develop empathy, challenge stereotypes and build strong, positive relationships. Most importantly, it helps every child feel valued, confident and proud of who they are.
