The new year has begun in Year 1!

15/2/24

What a brilliant start to the year we have had in Year 1. We have had so much fun learning all about the 4 countries of the UK and helping to finding a certain bear find a new home. Read on to find out more…

Geography
Our topic started with a visit from Paddington Bear! Paddington has sailed from deepest, darkest Peru and is seeking a new home in the UK. Year 1 took on the task of being Geographers to learn all about the UK to help Paddington decide where his new home should be. The children have blown us away with their knowledge and understanding this half term. They have used excellent geography skills to recap human and physical features, learn all about urban, rural and costal locations and to study the size, landscape and population of each of the 4 countries of the UK.

Science
In science we had some more 4 legged friends visit us (and leave a rather smelly mess!). The children used their skills of being a scientist to discover that different animals eat different things. We learnt all about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and also classified animals, using their features, into the groups: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and insects

Art
In art we have created our own version of the painting “Number in Colours” by Jasper Johns. To do this we needed to learn all about primary colours and use these to make secondary colours. We also looked at the work of Beatriz Milhazes and explored how she used colour and shape to create her own compositions inspired by her life in Brazil.

As you can see, we have been very bust this half term and the children have worked super hard. We are all looking forward to the half term break but we are very excited to see what next half term has in store for us. Have a lovely break Year 1!
