Science Rocks!

17/1/19

Year 3 have been finding out all about rocks this week. On Tuesday we used magnifying glasses to look at a range of different rocks so we could identify their features and use suitable vocabulary to compare them.

On Wednesday we found out about the three main rock types. Do you know what they are? They are called sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous. In fact there’s a very fun way you can demonstrate how these rock types are formed and it actually involves Starburst!

We used the sweets to create the layers that are formed over time in sedimentary rocks. Next we applied heat and pressure to transform them into metamorphic rocks. The final rock type is igneous and we used a microwave to turn the Starburst into a bubbling liquid. Once this hardened it looked like an igneous rock. So as you can see, science really does rock!
